Brexit and British citizens in the Netherlands

The UK has left the European Union. This affects all British citizens living or working in the Netherlands, as well as those planning to move here in the future.

If you will be working in the Netherlands after 1 January 2021

If you will be working and living in the Netherlands, your employer will have to arrange a work and residence permit (‘GVVA’) for you. This will give you permission to stay in the Netherlands and do your job.

If you will be working in the Netherlands for less than 90 days and will not have an official residence while you are here, you will only need a work permit (‘TWV’). Your employer will arrange this for you.

If you are you planning to stay in the Netherlands without a job

If you are planning to stay in the Netherlands for more than 90 days and do not have a job lined up, you will have to apply for a residence permit. To find out how to do this, visit the IND webpage on applying for a residence permit.
