Applying for income support
If you are returning to work with a partial WAO or WAZ benefit and are earning less than we think you should be, you might qualify for income support (‘inkomens- of loonsuppletie’). This is a benefit that supplements your income as an employed or self-employed person.
What are the criteria for income support?
To qualify for income support you will need to meet all of the following criteria:
- You must be receiving a partial WAO or WAZ benefit.
- You must have found a job that will last at least 6 months (if you are employed).
- You must be earning less than we think you should be as an employed or self-employed person.
Please note: You will not qualify for income support if you are receiving a WIA or Wajong benefit.
How to apply for income support
To apply, complete the Income support application form (‘Aanvragen inkomens- en loonsuppletie’). You will need either a DigiD account or a valid European electronic ID (‘Europees erkend inlogmiddel’) to do this. Please have your citizen service number (‘BSN’) close to hand when completing this form.
If you are working for an employer, send copies of your payslips and employment contract along with your application form.
When to apply for income support if you are self-employed
If you are self-employed, apply for income support in the same fiscal year that you started running your business. Do not forget to submit your application at least 6 months before this fiscal year ends.
If your occupational disability employment counsellor decides your WAZ benefit should be lower, apply for income support within 6 months of your counsellor making this decision.
When to apply for income support if you have an employer
If you are working for an employer, apply for income support within 2 months of starting your job.
If your occupational disability employment counsellor decides your WAZ benefit should be lower, apply for income support within 2 months of your counsellor making this decision.
How much income support will you get and for how long?

- In the 2nd year, you will receive 75% of the income support you received in the 1st year.
- In the 3rd year, you will receive 50% of the income support you received in the 1st year.
